Thomas C. Frohlich over at 24/7 Wall St. has ranked the 50 states according to their property tax rates. In our final installment in this series, we look at the five states with the highest property tax rates in the country.

Coming in at No. 5, we have Wisconsin.

The effective property tax rate in Wisconsin is 1.96 percent, while the median home value is $164,700, the 24th-lowest in the country. On average, $4,622 in property taxes is paid per tax return, which ends up being the 12th-highest in the country. Menominee County pays the most in real-estate taxes, with residents averaging $6,483 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 4, we have Connecticut.

Connecticut has the seventh-highest median home value in the country, averaging $267,200. Property taxes paid per tax return are the third-highest in the United States, at $7,294. The effective property tax rate is 1.98 percent.

The county that pays the most in real-estate taxes is Fairfield County, where an average of $10,189 in property taxes is paid per tax return.

At No. 3, we have New Hampshire.

The effective property tax rate in New Hampshire is 2.15 percent, and the median home value is the 13th-highest in the country, averaging $236,400. Property taxes paid per tax return are the fourth-highest nationwide, at $6,954.

Grafton County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, averaging $7,684 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 2, we have Illinois.

The effective property tax rate in Illinois is 2.32 percent. The median home value is the 24th-highest in the country at $171,900. The property taxes paid per tax return are the fifth-highest in the country, at $6,357.

Lake County pays the most in real-estate taxes in the state, with residents averaging $9,355 per tax return.

At No. 1, we have New Jersey.

New Jersey has the fourth-highest median home value in the country at $313,200, and the average property taxes paid per tax return are $8,943, which is the highest in the country. New Jersey’s effective property tax rate is 2.38 percent.

Essex County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with residents averaging $11,641 in property taxes per tax return.
