One of the greatest concerns many medical professionals have when they relocate to another state for a new job is how their taxes are going to be affected. Property taxes especially can vary from state to state.

Thomas C. Frohlich over at 24/7 Wall St. has ranked the 50 states according to their property tax rates from lowest to highest. In this post, we'll examine the five states with the lowest effective property tax rates.

Coming in at No. 50, we have Hawaii.

The effective property tax rate in Hawaii is 0.28 percent. The median home value is $528,000, which is the highest in the country. Property taxes paid per tax return are $1,993, which is the fifth-lowest nationwide rate. The county that pays the most in real-estate taxes is Kauai County, where residents pay $2,074 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 49, we have Alabama.

In Alabama, the effective property tax rate is 0.43 percent, while the median home value is $125,600, which is the seventh-lowest in the country.

Property taxes paid per tax return are actually the lowest in the United States at $1,352.

Jefferson County pays the most in real-estate taxes across the state with residents of Jefferson County paying $2,196 in property taxes.

At No. 48, we have Louisiana.

In Louisiana, the effective property tax rate is 0.51 percent. The median home value is the 18th-lowest in the United States at $143,600. Property taxes paid per tax return are $2,076, the seventh-lowest in the country.

The county paying the most in real-estate taxes is Orleans Parish, where $3,945 is paid per tax return.

At No. 47, we have Delaware.

The effective property tax rate in Delaware is 0.55 percent. The median home value is also the 15th-highest in the country at $230,500. Property taxes paid per tax return in Delaware are the 16th-lowest in the United States at $2,532.

New Castle County pays the most in real-estate taxes across the state at $2,893 per tax return.

At No. 46, we have South Carolina.

South Carolina has an effective property tax rate of 0.57 percent. The median home value is the 15th-lowest in the country at $140,000, and property taxes paid per tax return are the sixth-lowest in the nation at $2,041.

The county that pays the most in real-estate taxes in South Carolina is Beaufort County. Residents pay $3,510 per tax return.
