How to Integrate Industry Keywords into a Résumé

Posted on | Posted By | 0 Comments

In today’s post, we wrap up our look at ways in which you can demonstrate to a potential employer that you have the right personality for their culture. Communicating this message begins with your résumé.

Previously, we looked at how a physician can use their résumé to establish a sense of self and convey stability. Yesterday, we delved into alignment, as in aligning your résumé to the needs of an individual position. It’s vital that you avoid the “one-size-fits-all” approach to sending out job résumés, instead focusing on tailoring each version of your résumé to the specific job for which you’re applying.

According to Anish Majumdar, Certified Professional Résumé Writer (CPRW) and owner of RésuméOrbit.com, in an article for PracticeLink, identifying and integrating industry keywords is a great place to start in making your credentials stand out.

This has more to do with technology than anything else, he writes. “The key takeaway from a job market that is increasingly reliant on technology is the importance of developing a document that makes it simple for a reader to identify relevant industry terms and facilitates a positive decision about your worthiness as a candidate.”

There are three ways to do this, he continues.

First, “gather five to 10 relevant job postings to which you would seriously consider applying.”

Find similarities among these postings and ask yourself: “Which skills are called out time and time again? At which of these skills are you particularly proficient?”

Second, “insert a ‘Core Competencies’ section near the start of the CV that lists the keywords you’ve identified.”

By doing this, Majumdar writes, you’re increasing “the odds of your CV passing a quick scan while enhancing the overall focus of the document.”

Finally, “elaborate on the keywords listed in your ‘Core Competencies’ section within the work history section of your CV.”

This provides a potential employer with context and enables you to emphasize your strengths in a way that unifies the entire résumé.

As physicians who are looking for jobs, which keywords do you include in your résumé? Do you feel this helps you in attracting the attention of potential employers?
