Physicians, APs: Demonstrate Basic Manners in a Job Interview

As we wrap up our look at ways you can screw up a job interview, courtesy of contributing writer Alesia Benedict over at Salary.com., we’re reminded of lessons we learned as children: Always say please, followed by thank you. Listen when others are speaking. Be polite to everyone you meet. Etc. etc. etc.

These are common courtesies—basic manners, if you will—that most, if not all of us were taught from a young age.

The final way in which you could screw up a job interview is by forgetting basic manners.

Hey, you. Over there. Yeah, I’m talking to you, Dr. Brilliant. You’re a genius. You have a clinician pedigree second to none. You’re simply the best, better than all the rest.

Guess what. That brilliance isn’t enough to get you your next job. Dr. House is a fictional character. Most people can’t be Dr. House in real life. So instead, be Dr. Manners.

Per Benedict: “Not offering a handshake to ‘seal the deal’ when you leave, or failing to thank the interviewer for their time and express your pleasure in meeting him or her, is always going to leave a sour taste in the mouths of interviewers.”

And the impression this leaves will ring far louder than your degrees, skills, and accomplishments. Is it completely fair? Possibly not. But in an age when patient and employee satisfaction are paramount to an organization’s success, the last thing a healthcare employer wants is an impolite doc or AP.

So, fall back on the manners of your childhood. Don’t forget the basics of human interaction.

“Say something like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to meet with you today,’” Benedict suggests. “‘My talents and experience represent an asset to your organization, and I would be a committed member of your team.’”

As Emeril might say, “Bam!” Gratitude is sometimes the only ingredient you need to offer them a refreshing and delicious impression of who you are as a physician and as a person.
