Report: Physicians Have the Best-Paying Job in the U.S.

Earlier this year, U.S. News and World Report released its annual rankings of the 100 Best Jobs in the United States. Coming in at No. 4 among these jobs and coming in at No. 3 for Best Health Care Jobs were physicians.

According to the report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is “projecting that employment for physicians and surgeons will jump nearly 18 percent from 2012 to 2022, which translates to about 123,300 job openings. An aging population with increasing health concerns and health reform that will lead more Americans to healthcare services is driving this demand.”

Physicians also have the Best Paying Job in the United States. Nailing down salary, however, is tough, since it varies, the report notes, with general internists making “a median salary of $186,850” as of 2013. “Most doctors are paid well. In fact, a physician’s average salary was $188,440 in 2013, which was higher than any other salary in our Best Health Care Jobs list. Dentists, who made an average salary of $164,570 had the next highest salary. And pharmacists, by comparison, made approximately $116,500 in 2013. Registered nurses, who often work closely with doctors, made an average salary of $68,910 in 2013, or about $119,530 less than physicians.”

The top five best-paying cities for physicians may surprise you, with each of them compensating physicians with an average income of $250,000. These cities are: Wilmington, N.C.; Tallahassee, Fla.; Wichita, Kan.; Scranton, Penn.; and Sioux Falls, S.D.

In spite of the attractive salary, don’t underestimate the challenges that await you, Robert M. Wah, president of the American Medical Association, warns. “There are a lot of nonmedical people intruding into [a physician’s] exam room.”

Staying on top of the latest developments in medicine and politics will help keep you ahead of the curve, however. “You’re never really finished in medicine,” Wah, who is also an instructor in the District of Columbia, advises. “We teach our residents to be lifelong learners. You’re always working to learn more and stay abreast of the science.”
