States with the Lowest and Highest Property Tax Rates: Nos. 10 through 6

Thomas C. Frohlich over at 24/7 Wall St. has ranked the 50 states from lowest to highest according to their property tax rates. In this post, we begin examining the 10 states with the highest effective property tax rates.

Coming in at No. 10, we have Rhode Island.

The effective property tax rate in Rhode Island is 1.67 percent, while the median home value is $236,000, the 14th-highest in the country. On average, $5,214 in property taxes is paid per tax return, which ends up being the 10th-highest in the country. Bristol County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with residents averaging $7,112 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 9, we have Vermont.

Vermont has the 17th-highest median home value in the country, averaging $214,600. Property taxes paid per tax return are the eighth-highest in the United States, at $5,516. The effective property tax rate is 1.71 percent.

The county that pays the most in real-estate taxes is Windsor County, where an average of $6,533 in property taxes is paid per tax return.

At No. 8, we have Michigan.

The effective property tax rate in Michigan is 1.78 percent, and the median home value is the eighth-lowest in the country, at $125,700. Property taxes paid per tax return are the 22nd-highest in the country, averaging $3,716.

Washtenaw County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with $5,271 in property taxes paid per tax return.

At No. 7, we have Nebraska.

The effective property tax rate in Nebraska is 1.84 percent. The median home value is the 12th-lowest in the country at $133,800. The property taxes paid per tax return are the 18th-highest in the country, at $3,941.

Douglas County pays the most in real-estate taxes in the state, with residents averaging $4,551 per tax return.

At No. 6, we have Texas.

Texas has the 14th-lowest median home value in the country at $139,600, and the average property taxes paid per tax return are $5,615, which is the seventh-highest rate in the country. Texas’ effective property tax rate is 1.9 percent.

Travis County pays the most in real-estate taxes in the state, averaging $7,554 in property taxes per tax return.
