States with the Lowest and Highest Property Tax Rates: Nos. 15 through 11

Thomas C. Frohlich over at 24/7 Wall St. has ranked the 50 states from lowest to highest according to their property tax rates. In this post, we begin covering the 15 states with the highest property tax rates.

Coming in at No. 15, we have Kansas.

The effective property tax rate in Kansas is 1.39 percent, while the median home value is $132,100, the 10th-lowest in the country. On average, $3,302 in property taxes is paid per tax return, which ends up being the 25th-lowest in the country. Johnson County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with residents averaging $3,919 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 14, we have Iowa.

Iowa has the 11th-lowest median home value in the country, averaging $133,100. Property taxes paid per tax return are the 25th-highest in the United States, at $3,306. The effective property tax rate is 1.49 percent.

The county that pays the most in real-estate taxes is Johnson County, where an average of $4,138 in property taxes is paid per tax return.

At No. 13, we have Pennsylvania.

The effective property tax rate in Pennsylvania is 1.54 percent, and the median home value is the 25th-highest in the country, averaging $165,400. Property taxes paid per tax return are the 11th-highest in the country, at $4,853.

Delaware County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with $6,779 in property taxes paid per tax return.

At No. 12, we have Ohio.

The effective property tax rate in Ohio is 1.55 percent. The median home value is the ninth-lowest in the country at $129,100. The property taxes paid per tax return are the 19th-highest in the country, at $3,874.

Delaware County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with residents averaging $5,815 per tax return.

At No. 11, we have New York.

New York has the sixth-highest median home value in the country at $279,100, and the average property taxes paid per tax return are $8,208, which is the second-highest in the country. New York’s effective property tax rate is 1.64 percent.

Westchester County pays the most in real-estate taxes within the state, averaging $14,360 in property taxes per tax return.
