States with the Lowest and Highest Property Tax Rates: Nos. 20 through 16

Thomas C. Frohlich over at 24/7 Wall St. has ranked the 50 states from lowest to highest according to their property tax rates. In our last post, we began looking at the states with the highest property taxes.

Coming in at No. 20, we have Alaska.

The effective property tax rate in Alaska is 1.18 percent, while the median home value is $254,500, the 10th-highest in the country. On average, $4,145 in property taxes is paid per tax return, which ends up being the 16th-highest in the country. Anchorage Municipality is the county that pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with residents averaging $4,787 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 19, we have Minnesota.

Minnesota has the 21st-highest median home value in the country, averaging $188,300. Property taxes paid per tax return are the 24th-highest in the United States, at $3,446. The effective property tax rate is 1.19 percent.

The county that pays the most in real-estate taxes is Hennepin County, where an average of $4,598 in property taxes is paid per tax return.

At No. 18, we have Massachusetts.

The effective property tax rate in Massachusetts is 1.21 percent, where the median home value is the third-highest in the country, averaging $338,900. Property taxes paid per tax return are the sixth-highest in the country, at $5,739.

Middlesex County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with $6,881 in property taxes paid per tax return.

At No. 17, we have Maine.

Maine has the 23rd-highest median home value in the country at $174,800, and the average property taxes paid per tax return are $4,061, which is the 17th-highest in the country. Maryland’s effective property tax rate is 1.28 percent.

Cumberland County pays the most in real-estate taxes across the state, averaging $4,931 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 16, we have South Dakota.

The effective property tax rate in South Dakota is 1.32 percent. The median home value is the 16th-lowest in the country at $142,300. The property taxes paid per tax return are the 23rd-highest in the country, averaging $3,640.

Union County pays the most in real-estate taxes in the state, where residents average $5,276 per tax return.
