States with the Lowest and Highest Property Tax Rates: Nos. 30 through 26

Thomas C. Frohlich over at 24/7 Wall St. has ranked the 50 states from lowest to highest according to their property tax rates. We examined the first 20 earlier this month.

Coming in at No. 30, we have Montana.

The effective property tax rate in Montana is 0.86 percent, while the median home value is $196,800, the 19th-highest in the country. On average, $2,631 in property taxes is paid per tax return, which ends up being the 18th-lowest in the country. Missoula County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with residents averaging $3,326 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 29, we have Nevada.

Nevada has the 20th-highest median home value in the country, averaging $192,100. Property taxes paid per tax return are the 22nd-lowest in the United States, at $2,790. The effective property tax rate is 0.86 percent.

The county that pays the most in real-estate taxes is Douglas County, where an average of $3,984 in property taxes is paid per tax return.

At No. 28, we have Oklahoma.

The effective property tax rate in Oklahoma is 0.86 percent, and the median home value is the fourth-lowest in the country, averaging $119,800. Property taxes paid per tax return are the 12th-lowest in the country, averaging $2,389.

Tulsa County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with $3,104 in property taxes paid per tax return.

At No. 27, we have Georgia.

Georgia has the 19th-lowest median home value in the country at $147,900, and the average property taxes paid per tax return are $2,736, the 20th-lowest in the country. Georgia’s effective property tax rate is 0.95 percent.

Greene County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, averaging $4,976 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 26, we have Missouri.

The effective property tax rate in Missouri is 1.02 percent. The median home value is the 13th-lowest in the country at $138,500. The property taxes paid per tax return are the 23rd-lowest in the country, at $2,851.

St. Louis County is the county that pays the most in real-estate taxes in the state. Residents pay an average of $4,124 per tax return in St. Louis County.
