States with the Lowest and Highest Property Tax Rates: Nos. 40 through 36

Thomas C. Frohlich over at 24/7 Wall St. has ranked the 50 states from lowest to highest according to their property tax rates. We covered the bottom ten states, the ones with the lowest property taxes nationwide, in our previous two posts.

Coming in at No. 40, we have New Mexico.

The effective property tax rate in New Mexico is 0.73 percent, while the median home value is $158,400, the 21st-lowest in the country. On average, $2,480 in property taxes is paid per tax return, which ends up being the 15th-lowest nationwide. Santa Fe County pays the most in real-estate taxes across New Mexico, with residents averaging $2,897 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 39, we have Idaho.

Idaho has the 25th-lowest median home value in the country, averaging $165,300. Property taxes paid per tax return are the 11th-lowest in the United States, at $2,303. The effective property tax rate is 0.75 percent.

The county that pays the most in real-estate taxes is Blaine County, where an average of $5,292 in property taxes is paid per tax return.

At No. 38, we have Tennessee.

The effective property tax rate in Tennessee is 0.75 percent, and the median home value is the 17th-lowest in the country, averaging $142,900. Property taxes paid per tax return are the 19th-lowest nationwide, averaging $2,640.

Shelby County pays the most in real-estate taxes statewide, with $3,767 in property taxes paid per tax return.

At No. 37, we have Virginia.

Virginia has the 11th-highest median home value in the country at $247,800. The average property taxes paid per tax return are $3,727, which is the 21st-highest rate in the country. Virginia’s effective property tax rate is 0.78 percent.

Falls Church City is the county that pays the most in real-estate taxes across the state, averaging $8,516 in property taxes per tax return.

At No. 36, we have Arizona.

The effective property tax rate in Arizona is 0.8 percent. The median home value is the 22nd-highest in the country, at $176,700. The property taxes paid per tax return are the 14th-lowest nationwide, at $2,479.

Pima County pays the most in real-estate taxes in the state. Residents pay an average of $2,946 in property taxes per tax return in Pima County.
